Illegal tapping is a form of oil theft where a hole is made in an active pipe and oil or gas is tapped through a hose into a container. After collecting a certain amount of oil, the thieves leave the pipe without patching up the holes. Crude oil will continue to leak through the hole, resulting in large losses and pollution. Drones can access areas that were previously difficult or impossible to reach by conventional methods, while also collecting more accurate information about the location of the illegal tapping.

Result

Improved security for workers: Workers do not need to visit assets vulnerable to crime.
Faster work time: Drones can be moved from point to another in a short time.
Easy operation: Drones can be operated by two people with little time and workers can easily be trained to use.
Wide range: Drones can cover large areas in one flight, and can reach areas that are difficult or inaccessible to workers.
Improvex communication: Data from drones will be added to a single platform that workers can access simultaneously, avoiding miscommunication and speeding up decisions.

Project Outline

Terra Inspectioneering provided non-entry visual testing, ultrasonic thickness testing, and deformation analysis services to Vopak using the proprietary collision-proof Terra UT drone. The drone inspection services were offered for tanks owned and operated by Vopak at 11 sites across Belgium and the Netherlands. Terra Inspectioneering conducted the inspections according to international standards EEMUA-159 and API-653, and provided Vopak with a fully digitized, cloud-based report containing 2D and 3D annotations.

On 28 September, 2018, the island of Sulawesi was hit by a double disaster: a magnitude 7.5 earthquake which triggers a three-meter high tsunami. The tsunami wiped out water, power, sewerage and other amenities while the earthquake caused major soil liquefaction, leading to mudflows, which added to the difficult task of rebuilding.

Before recovery could begin, there was a need to confirm the current state of the land and topography, but the risk of aftershocks and blocked roads made field survey a risky process.

Using drone-mounted LiDAR technology, Terra Drones Indonesia safely and efficiently surveyed over 1,000 hectares of land. The collected data was used to create high-resolution maps of the areas, making it possible to confirm the ground condition, determine to topography, and identify areas most impacted by the disaster.

Our proprietary LiDAR technology has been used in disaster recovery, disaster prevention, and in forestry and civil engnineering surveying. We have participated in more than 2,000 surveying projects worldwide.
